This is Sonic Sudoku, a ROM hack by RetroKoH and CCB357.
This hack is exactly what the name suggests! It's Sonic, but you're playing Sudoku... while you're playing Sonic!
If you aren't familiar with Sudoku, here is a quick rundown of how the game works. You're presented with a 9x9 grid that you must fill with numbers from 1 to 9. To complete the puzzle, you must fill in the grid so that each number appears exactly ONCE in every row, ONCE in every column, and ONCE in every 3x3 sub-grid. In Sonic Sudoku, you fill in the grid by collecting numbered flags in each stage. Which numbers will fill in which spaces? I'm glad you asked!
The HUB room's Sudoku Grid is divided into nine (9) smaller 3x3 sub-grids. Each of these blocks is colored to suit the Zone that it corresponds to. You can use transporters to enter a Zone's Warp Room. From there, you'll find rings for each Zone's Acts! Each of the sub-grid's rows corresponds to an Act in that Zone. This means that the top row belongs to Act 1, the middle row belongs to Act 2, and the bottom row belongs to Act 3. If you collect numbered flags in that Act, their numbers will be entered into their respective places in that Act's row, provided they belong in that row to begin with. You'll see this happen in real-time in the RESULTS screen. Once you complete a zone's sub-grid, you have the option of entering a Giant Red Ring leading to a FOURTH ACT, fighting that zone's boss, and earning a Bonus Coin. These coins don't serve a purpose, however (At least, not yet...).
You may also buy numbers using the HUB's Ring Exchange. The first number costs 100 Rings, with each subsequent number costing 50 Rings more than the last. Your Ring count will be retained between stages, so feel free to replay and rack up Rings as you wish. If you get hurt, you'll only lose up to 50 rings, but if you die, you'll lose all of your rings. Shields found along the way will help you, and they are also retained between stages. Collect a Blue Shield to unlock Elemental Shields!
Sonic's abilities include:
This ROM hack is built off of S1Fixed, a modded version of Sonic 1 with a wide variety of bugfixes and modifications. The biggest changes to this hack are the HUB, the Sudoku Table system, the Results screen, and various gameplay elements such as the removal of lives, and the expanded HUB elements. Level layouts are nearly identical to the original Sonic 1 (with the exception of Scrap Brain Zone), though some adjustments have been made in various areas.
Finally, if you somehow get stuck in a level, pause the game and press A to return to the HUB.

Pou Sudoku better lol
This entry was fun to play through, it kinda reminded of S1EE but better! (probably cus of the HUD worlds lol) Although I have noticed the palette kinda glitching out a little after beating an act, and there was one route towards the end of LZ3 underwater where I got softlocked.
Thanks for the feedback! Can you lemme know where exactly you encountered the softlock?
I've encountered them here:

it seems sonic doesn't move fast enough underwater to preform the warp after hitting the checkpoint...
Oh wow... Thank you for bringing this up. I was able to get it to finish there, but I was probably already fast enough beforehand. I really did approach that shortcut route rather short-sightedly...
Did it at least let you use Start+A to exit?

Yes, I did =)
Love this one, it's a really creative idea and it's fun to explore these stages with a new objective. I faced a couple of bugs though. In Marble Act 1 I think, one of the glass things blocking the way refused to go down when I pressed the button. The button also beeped constantly while Sonic was on it instead of beeping just once. When I reentered the stage it worked but still had the audio glitch. And on Spring Yard Act 3, the post for the end of stage is missing, you can't finish it.
Thank you for the feedback. I am curious about the lamppoat issue. I'll need to double check object layouts but I could've sworn I checked those. Either I made a grievous error, or the Object Manager is bugged.
Either way, thank you for reporting it!
Some minor errors as they said this project is very good :-D
The premise is very original, although I'm not fan of Sudoku itself, this is a quite novel way to play it.
It boils down to "look for those pesky numbers you need, or grind your ass to buy them"
By far the most interesting gimmick on this SHC, for sure.
A cool concept, though it really just boils down to finding the thing or grinding for rings, and I'm not a huge fan of treasure hunt type of hacks, so I didn't play this one much when I realized what I was getting into. Interesting gimmick, though.
For sure, I completely understand that this combination of concepts won't be for everyone! Thank you for trying it, regardless!
God, I love it when people mix action games with puzzle games and it actually ends up working.
...Man, I should really get around to playing Knuckles' Emerald Hunt, huh.
Thank you! I plan on improving it for next year. I also need to revisit Emerald Hunt too.
