Sonic Like Legos

By Rhythm_and_Tempo

Sonic Like Legos is a thought experiment level design hack that asks a question: "If you take all the pieces of the phenomenal 2D Sonic levels from the good ol' days and shuffle them around to build new levels 'Ship of Theseus'-style, are the levels still any good?"

This project has been slowly worked on over the past 6 years, starting before I even began work on Super Mario Eclipse. This has a unique side effect of the quality of the levels presented in the rom (in my humble opinion anyway) getting better as the game goes on. So Green Hill, which was built in 2019, can be a bit sloppy and confusing at times, whereas Star Light and Scrap Brain I consider to be my best work. So please stick around beyond Green Hill if you can, it's part of the experiment!

My goal wasn't really to build good levels, it was to build creative and interesting ones that really push the envelope of how the Genesis Sonic levels are designed. So if the levels happen to be great to play through, it's a wonderful and happy accident. But that's not to say the levels are bad either, I did my homework and made sure they were entirely playable and thoroughly tested. All 19 acts of the game have been fully rebuilt from the ground up, all while adhering to the many limitations of Sonic Team's original design, such as camera locks, water heights, controls, etc. All 6 special stages are also redesigned, and as a secret bonus, I've hidden 20 goggles monitors throughout the game- one in each act, and a bonus monitor in Spring Yard Act 3 to round out the total. They don't do anything upon collecting them, but I hope you'll poke around and explore these megalithic levels anyway and just have fun seeing what can be done with the assets Sonic Team designed!

I'm not really entirely sure, if I'm fully sold on the concept of this tbh

Same here. Unless those are counterfeit Legos :D

Some layouts end being quite cruel at parts, in particular Marble Zone, and sometimes it looks very unfinished.

Not a terrible hack, but... not quite there yet.

This was a very unique and cool hack, doing Sonic design less like common fanworks, and more like other games, attempting stage design in an unorthodox manner, with a new perspective. The use of objects to create new setpieces is cool, like the various object bridges in Marble, it’s also interesting how some areas are indoors but with an outdoor background. I like how the stage design is more like a conventional platformer, using bobbing platforms for a proper challenge, rather than mere visual flair.

I was quite intrigued by the idea of this one, and some of the level design (Especially earlier on) truly fascinated me. However, I felt myself getting a bit bored by the time of Labyrinth, and then quite infuriated once Star Light Zone came around, ESPECIALLY with the fans in the boss fight. I didn't necessarily have a bad time with it, but it could be a tad easier, and have alternate level palettes to distinguish it from Sonic 1 a bit more.

I genuinely liked the level design here, there's things that with some custom chunks, could make it feel much smoother.

I loved it. It has a few bugs, but it's well done. A light Sonic 1 hack that's worth it.
